Don't forget to make some memories!

What is in the Mirror?

What is in the Mirror?

“Can we make a video of us?” Two-year-old Baylor came into my office and walked up to my office chair.

“Sure. What do you want to talk about?” I pulled her up in my lap.

“Just talk,” she said.

We turned on the camera and started talking. For a minute we exchanged pleasantries, made funny faces, and conversed about various things.

Time came to view our work. I pushed play and Baylor watched intently. She laughed at every antic. “Oh,” she said raising her arm to the top of her head, “I have a bow.”

Evidently she hadn’t looked in the mirror that morning after she was dressed. She had no idea she was wearing a bow in her hair even though it was midday.

“You look very pretty,” I said. “I love your pretty curls and especially your bow.”

“I have a pink bow,” she said again.

Have you ever been surprised by your reflection in the mirror? The surprise may not have been a bow.

Perhaps you glance in the mirror as you walk by and hardly recognize the person looking back at you. He or she looks overtired, thoughtful, and even unhappy? Is that the countenance you want your children to see?

Sometimes we forget the importance of sharing the joy in our hearts with the world. We may not be unhappy but our faces don’t reflect that.

Next time you pass a mirror, check what others are seeing. It’s fine to check overall appearance but be sure your smile is showing for others to see. In fact, why not make up a game to play with your children each time you pass a mirror. Make lots of different faces discussing why they are good or bad. Challenge your children to display a happy countenance that reflects God’s love in their lives.

You may also use this as a Scripture teaching opportunity. “A joyful heart makes a cheerful face, but when the heart is sad, the spirit is broken (Proverbs 15:13).
