Don't forget to make some memories!

Summertime Prayer

Summertime Prayer

So I commended enjoyment because there is nothing better for man under the sun than to eat, drink, and enjoy himself, for this will accompany him in his labor during the days of his life that God gives him under the sun. Ecclesiastes 8:15 (HCSB)

The weather tells me that summer is in full swing. As I spend time outdoors, I can’t help but remember my own childhood. It felt like I burst out of school and ran full-blast, downhill into summer fun. I spent every moment I could outside, either playing or reading.

These fond memories have led me to today’s prayer for my children. I’m asking God to give them the time to be kids. In this over-scheduled world, that’s not as easy as it used to be. And I’ve learned that being on too tight a schedule leads to a nasty kind of stress—in me as well as in my kids.

Dear Lord, today I’m asking for You to help me leave room for my children to be children. In my drive to make every moment count, I know I often leave out room for spontaneity. Show me how to manage life as a parent with a healthier balance.

I want to take advantage of the time I have with my kids while they’re young, but I don’t want to script every moment. So much of the joy of childhood is through discovery. Don’t ever let me stand in the way of that.

Give me practical solutions that allow me to help our family grow closer to you and to each other without becoming a nightmare parent. Show me when to put away the to-do list and concentrate on the to-be’s that are so important.

Remind me of the joy of goofing off and goofing around. Use my children to introduce me to the freedom of play. Re-ignite the creative legacy You’ve passed to all of us. Never let me put my schedule and need to accomplish tasks over the precious time of enjoying my kids. Amen.
