Rattlesnake Summit

Rattlesnake Summit

Last year I went hiking with my six-year-old son, Carver. We hiked to the top of Rattlesnake Summit. Sounds dangerous, right?

It wasn’t.

The wide gravel path climbed slowly up the mountain until we reached the top.  Our climb took place in the Black Mountains of North Carolina, so my biggest worry was happening across a black bear and her cubs.

We thought about taking a bear bell, but decided we would be safe enough. Plus, I truly believed I could take a black bear. I was an All-American wrestler and I slept at a Holiday Inn Express the night before—just kidding.

A black bear weighs on average 247lb. I had 60+lbs on any bear we might have come across. It wouldn’t stand a chance. Luckily, for the bear, we didn’t see any.

What we did see were some amazing views of God’s beautiful handiwork. The unspoiled views of lush green mountains carried for miles as the wind blew through our sweat-dampened hair.

It was awesome. We had cell reception, so we used Facetime to connect with the rest of the family. Carver was so proud.

On top of the mountain, I had the opportunity of sharing with Carver how God created all of the mountains and all of the trees. We got to talk about how big the world is and how God is so powerful and mighty to have created it all.

We could have sat and just relaxed and caught our breath. Instead, I turned this mountaintop experience into a moldable moment. I used the moment to mold my son’s understanding of the world and his place in it as a child of God.

How can you create a moldable moment to share God’s glory through creation with your child this summer?
