Don't forget to make some memories!

Making our Bedrooms Havens Once Again

Making our Bedrooms Havens Once Again

Fall is a great time to assess our bedrooms. A fresh splash of color, bed linens, pillows and covers can add some pizzazz to the room that we spend a great deal of time in. Sometimes our bedrooms take a back seat when it comes to updating our home decor, but that doesn’t have to be. The reality is that we should give the same attention to this room as we give to the other more public rooms of our house.

Nine times out of ten, though, I focus specifically on the main areas, as we can always shut the door to a messy bedroom when company comes over. Ahem … not that I would know. Ha!

This fall remember the colors that are strong for the season. Navy, “orangey” corals, and jewel tones mixed with rich texture and a crisp, fresh finish to the touch can make our bedrooms a haven once again.

Let’s not forget the kids in this either. I remember many days just closing those doors off. We usually have beautiful nurseries when the kids are little, but let’s face it, the older they get, the more it doesn’t seem as important as it once did.

But nothing feels better than a new cozy comforter for the coming cooler days of fall and winter, a couple of fun new pillows and the excitement of new sheets.

After spending so much of our time and energy on the main living areas of our house and even the outdoors for the summer months, turning our attention to our very own sanctuary can be just the jolt we might need. Even if you can’t afford to replace all of the bedding linens, a few well-placed pillows, a reversible quilt, and fresh sheets doesn’t have to break the bank. Investing in your own space can pay huge dividends in the quality of rest you get each night.

You’ll be happy to have turned your attention to this important room at this stage of the game before the Christmas season is fully upon us. Once we roll into the holidays its incredibly hard to find the space for sprucing up a room that won’t get seen by the outside world. But, seriously, do yourself a favor and don’t neglect it.

We recently did a couple of bedroom upgrades. Our comforter had gotten worn and faded, so we recently replaced with a new duvet, pillows and fresh sheets. It’s such a joy to come in and see such beautiful color. It is inviting and welcoming to us.

We also redid our daughter’s room – the simple decorations make it easy for a quick cleanup prior to her arrival home from college for the weekend. But it’s fresh color and clean lines and style also make it inviting and comforting. While we still have more work to do, we are pleased with how it’s shaping up.

When we take the time to do a little redecorating for our children’s rooms whether they are 5 or 15 or 20, they will know that we care specifically for their comfort and they will have a special space to call their own. We’ve had Pepto Bismol pink colored walls, and we’ve had ocean waves in a mural across every blue wall. We’ve had glow in the dark stars, sponge painted on the ceiling so that each time we turned out the lights for bedtime, the stars appeared. Each time it was to fit an individual personality and it was super sweet to let them know they were special with the attention to their room. I hope you’ll give it a try as we march straight into fall.
