Love and Marriage

Love and Marriage

Do you feel challenged in protecting your children from the images and misinformation about dating and marriage relationships that have long been flooding our culture? I’ve successfully navigated these stormy waters and am here to help you.

Wanting to prevent my children from making the same mistakes I made, whenever I saw a decorative heart I began praying,

Father, above all else

help us to guard our hearts

for they determine the course of our lives. (Proverbs 4:23)

He did.

I prayed this very effective prayer,

Father, any young man who is not a part of Your sovereign will

for our daughters’ lives, please grant them a holy fear regarding them.

He did.

One evening, after winning another beauty pageant, our oldest daughter sat at home eating cookie dough and watching chick flicks with her baby sister and me. She asked, “Why do boys not like me?” They rarely asked her for a date. With great delight, I exclaimed that God was answering my prayer and saving her for someone very special.

 He did.

We discussed the unavoidable tabloids at the checkout counters, noting the multiple miserable relationships that had repeatedly broken the hearts of the stars so many strive to be like. I would ask, “Is this what you want your life to look like?” “Of course not,” is the standard, thoughtful response.

Our youngest and I engaged in social media together, discussing the relational drama that would forever mark her life if she began moving in and out of dating relationships. She’s beautiful, and at age 21, she’s never been kissed.

Father, please inspire Your children to learn from the mistakes of others.

Grant them courage to walk according to Your Will,

especially when it’s uncomfortable.

Grant them wisdom to influence and infect others

with a glorious passion for You.

 He did.

I prayed,

May these, Your children, be fully wedded to Your Will,

no matter what the cost.

They are.

I cried out,

Father, please surround our children with God-honoring

individuals who love to pray and commit to faith-filled action,

those who will reinforce our biblical teaching and inspire our children

to love You with a reverent passion,

serve others with passionate compassion,

and pursue holiness.

He did.

Next month I’ll share more practical, effective prayers and tools for taking your child from infancy to altar.
