Real Praise for Your Children

Have you had the challenge of working in an environment of negative motivation—a place where praise is rare, but complaints flourish? I had the fate of working in such a place. Sadly, I don’t believe the management even knew their folly, because they fell into the trap of thinking their comments were balanced. The supervisor would start by giving general, non-specific words of praise, “You’re doing well,” then with a “but” they would continue with a lengthy list of specific areas in which the employee needed to improve and instances when they had not met management expectations/ After all, “Nobody is perfect, there is always room for improvement.” Since the praise was far from specific, it had almost no value against the specific complaints and it was discouraging overall. The reality is, even if there are no negative comments,...

Covid Fear is Also Affecting Our Children

We sat outside with our drive-through ice-creams and jabbered, like teen-agers out on a night away from the confines of mom, dad and home. Ten ladies, escaping pandemic restrictions for a few hours on an afternoon, properly distanced and cautious. We talked about work, people, general gab. I stepped away from the patio circle, left behind the voices and gaiety to answer my phone. It was a Facetime call. I held it up and saw some of the cutest little faces looking at me. “Grandma!” My five-year-old grandson and his three-year-old brother exclaimed. “Grandma, where are you?” A frown drew the older grandson’s brows together. He looked past my face to where my friends sat apart but together. For a moment I forgot how strange it was to socialize, to hear voices and laughter. I forgot how quickly children...

Enjoy the Month of Love

Posted by on Feb 1, 2021 in Blog, Bonus Days | 1 comment

Enjoy the month of love with the loved ones God gave you Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 NLT Why is the shortest month of the year the one that celebrates everything love and hugs and kisses? Perhaps that just means we’ll need to work extra hard to squeeze in lots of adoring accolades, endearing embraces, and memory-making moments. Clothe yourselves with love as part of your daily ensemble during the month of February, and hopefully, the habit will spill over into the next month and the one after that, too. Celebrate the love of family by taking part in the holidays and silly festivities below, and perhaps create a few unique family ones, too. Sweater Day –  Have everyone dress in warm sweaters and go for a walk...

Have Some Fun and Make Some Memories

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) Fresh off the heels of the month of gratitude comes another month to be grateful and to give praise to the “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” and newborn babe laid in a manger. Find much to celebrate during the month of Jesus’ birth. Tell the story over and over again. Read it from His Word, and sing hymns proclaiming His birthday. In addition to much fanfare about a baby born in Bethlehem this month, incorporate some of these unusual, but actual, holidays in your family festivities. National Pear Month – Work together in the kitchen to prepare...

The Miracle of Bethesda

The acoustics in the Church of Saint Anne in Jerusalem are out of this world. The sound echoes and plays on the walls, transforming the music of our small group so that it sounds like a much larger group is singing. Our tour group sang the old hymn, “How Great Thou Art,” although I simply mouthed the words because the last thing this holy site needed was the horror of my singing voice amplified by these walls. My voice is enough to make even a saint faint. But fortunately our group had some beautiful voices… O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds Thy hands hath made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed… The day we visited Saint Anne’s was a gorgeous spring afternoon, with...
