Raising a Generation Dangerous in Prayer

What do you think of when you hear a train whistle? Did you know that it’s a thrilling sound that can change the world? When we moved our teen and toddler from Houston to a very small country community, the house was in ghastly condition, requiring extensive cleaning and repairs. With our belongings held hostage by boxes, we worked hard to establish basic creature comforts such as toilets that flushed, running water, and other critical needs. The girls stayed with my parents while we ripped out flea-infested carpet and stripped and painted surfaces throughout the house, working to the point of exhaustion every day. Without the clutter of city lights, the moon and stars were breathtaking. But the nighttime noises! I thought I’d exchange the frantic sounds of the city for soft breezes that moved the trees to whisper...

Beware of Great Lies

It’s so important that we guard our children’s hearts, minds, and lives at all times, in all circumstances, and at every stage of life. Being active in prayer and interacting relationally when children are young can save a mountain of broken hearts and relationships; but even when broken, God is able to make all things new. And whether you have obedient children who respect authority, or are faced with children walking in rebellion or making poor choices, our response is the same. We win spiritual battles by using spiritual strategies. Our Bibles are our primary weapon for responding to every deception, distraction, and assault of satan. So let’s use it. When opening my Bible, I plead that my family will have a passion for God’s Word. They do. But there’s more, Father, please grant them discernment in the world....

Beware of Great Lies

Beware of the great lies, “boys will be boys” and “girls will be girls.” Or “They’re teenagers (or adults) and so I no longer have influence in their lives.” Eli’s refusal to restrain his sons had a devastating impact on his family and the nation of Israel (1 Sam. 3). It helps to define parenting goals. Some parents live to launch their children from the family nest. Others want their children to be successful by the world’s standards in education and profession. But shouldn’t our ultimate goal be to strive for God’s approval for a job well done in raising His children to love, honor, and serve Him and others? How do we achieve this? The Holy Spirit must govern our lives and theirs. So let’s pray about it, Father, Please help us to pray life-defining prayers over the...

A Lovely Idea

Posted by on Nov 21, 2017 in A LASTING FAITH, Blog, Prayers and Promises | 0 comments

A lovely idea is rapidly becoming a tradition for many families, and the kids love this one. We haul out the Christmas tree in early October (but you could still do this for Thanksgiving and until you’re ready to decorate your Christmas tree!) and string lights and garlands of artificial autumn leaves on its branches. The photo I’ve shared is a starting point. Let your imagination take you from there, adding artificial fall flowers, pinecones, birds’ nests, and feathers, with other things you find on a walk through the woods. Now for the Advent of Thanksgiving journey. What’s special to you and your family? Because my father died this year, we collected photographs of special memories with him, a sweet time of thanksgiving. Then we used medium-sized clothespins to attach them to a piece of twine draped around the...

Planting a Forest One Seed at a Time

Because of being wounded at church, my family stopped attending when I was a child. As a teen, I occasionally went with a friend. It’s been many years, but I remember clinging to every word as a pastor shared how God spoke to him following a personal tragedy. While preaching a revival, someone didn’t see that his son, Luke, was in the parking lot. The child was struck and killed. This pastor and father breathed the oxygen of agony until his heart was able to receive the seed that changed his life and mine. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 NKJV About three years later, this verse kept me from taking my life when facing a devastating trauma...

Prayer that Transforms Hearts to Transform the World

If you have difficulty motivating your children to assume responsibility, this article is for you. Cruel remarks from a best friend had crushed Melissa Ann’s heart. Hurting with her, we wanted to do something special to help heal the pain. We began considering her desire for a horse that had started when we moved to the country. Because horses require a lot of daily care, we suggested she get up at 5:00 every morning for six weeks to read books about horses (for a minimum of two hours). The books had to be read on the patio table – rain or shine and in extraordinarily cold or hot temperatures because these conditions would be part of the experience of caring for a horse. So what did she do? Without going into details about that experience, six weeks later, we...
