Object Lesson – Spiritual Debt

Posted by on Apr 10, 2015 in A LASTING FAITH, Blog, Finding God’s Fingerprints | 0 comments

Materials Needed: Money – amount of your choice (two bills of the same amount – I used two $100 bills) Scripture Reference: Romans 6:23 Preparation before doing the object lesson: Give two people the money (divided equally). One of the volunteers will be the lender and the other the benefactor. Instruct the lender to offer money when you ask for it, and then at a later point in the lesson, ask for the money to be paid back. The benefactor should be instructed to pay the loan in full. *Give both of them a copy of the script below so they’ll know when and what to respond. Lesson: So, what is debt? Debt is defined as “sin or trespass, something owed, and a state of owing.” Let’s have a demonstration to help us better understand debt. Teacher: “Does anyone...

Searching for Treasure

Materials:  basic box and decorative jewelry box Scripture Reference:  II Corinthians 4:18 My almost three-year-old twins are quite an investigative team. They are very agile and use each other and anything that is mobile to climb to attain whatever captured their attention. My eldest daughter, Anna, has two small decorative boxes on top of her chest of drawers. Currently, as a result of perfect hindsight, the boxes are empty, but in previous months Anna kept some of her treasures inside. There is another box also sitting on top of the chest of drawers, but it is plain and unnoticeable. That box is full of earrings, bracelets, and rings. These items filling the ordinary box were previously the contents of the decorative boxes. I recently noticed Anna’s treasures are in no danger of being removed and scattered because Ethan and...

Materials: Globe Scripture reference:  Psalms 103:12; John 15:13 Many of us have heard songs or messages about our sins being removed as far as the east is from the west, but maybe another thought of this could be beneficial. When looking at a globe it is easy to see if a person traveling North continues in the same direction without turning around the direction would eventually be toward the South. The same is not true for traveling East and West. If travel begins toward the East and continues without turning around, the route remains eastward. The East and West never meet. God, our omniscient creator, was well aware of this when He instructed the psalmist, David, to write the sweet words of Psalm 103:12, The part of this that is currently weighing heavily on my mind is about the...

A Treatment Plan

Materials:  stethoscope Scripture Reference: Psalm 26:2 This time of year, we are often thinking about our goals or changes we would make for the upcoming year. Many of our goals are related to physical improvements and financial gain, but it is important for every believer in Christ to really examine their heart to determine needs for improved spiritual health. A stethoscope is an instrument used by physicians at every appointment. It allows the physician to listen to a beating heart and lung inhalation/exhalation. A person can appear healthy, but by careful examination, a severe health risk may be discovered. No one likes to receive a report of potentially failing health, but once a diagnosis is made, a treatment plan can be implemented to try to reverse any damage and prevent a catastrophe. Many of us are resistant to going to the doctor. Our excuses for skipping...

No Record

Materials:  Record books (example – mileage records, a calendar, etc.) Scripture Reference: I John 2:1 and Romans 8:26 Several months ago, I was getting ready for church and I overheard my oldest daughter, Anna, on the phone with her father. She had called to give him a list of infractions committed by her younger sister and brother throughout the day. Anna was very careful to relay every detail and she was eager to know what punishment would be rendered upon his return. Almost instantly, God whispered in my heart, “Aren’t you glad your Big Brother is not keeping records of your sins?” I was suddenly praising Him because He reminded me that I am forgiven and my sins are forever forgotten, never between God and me again. In fact, I was also sweetly reminded that my Big Brother, Jesus,...

Plentiful Blessings

Materials: Cornucopia Scripture Reference: Psalm 13:6; Psalm 31:23 Fall is one of my favorite seasons. The mountains here in Western North Carolina glow with radiant shades of orange and red, the air is crisp and clear, and the sky is magnificent blue. It is a welcome reminder of God’s beautiful handiwork. One symbol that we see during this season is a cornucopia, also called “a horn of plenty.” It is often filled with gourds, squash, or pumpkins, symbolizing a plentiful harvest. As we approach Thanksgiving, we need to remember the plentiful blessings we have been given. God has blessed us more than we really have the ability to comprehend. Does this mean we do not or will not have difficult circumstances? No, but God has promised His presence, guidance, and protection for those who trust in Him and try...
