3 Life Lessons Our Kids Teach Us

3 Life Lessons Our Kids Teach Us

Moms and dads expend a measureless amount of time and energy teaching their kids everything from basic life skills—how to use a potty, how to dress, how to eat with a fork—to character development and beyond. Books and blogs and magazine articles abound, offering advice and information for every topic imaginable.

Sometimes, though, it’s refreshing to turn the focus around and think about the lessons our kids teach us.

“While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about,” says author William Saroyan.  I totally agree. My kids were masterful at instructing me in life’s important matters, and they did so without intention. Here are three examples:

  • Kids teach that joy is found in simplicity.

My children squealed with delight if a ladybug landed near them. They gushed over spring’s first flower poking through the earth. They giggled at a monkey’s antics when we visited the zoo. And they always had a blast creating imaginary play stations from cardboard boxes. Simple things satisfied them. Need I say more?

  • Kids teach us to be fearless.

Granted, some might interpret this as “reckless,” but I’m not talking about senseless risk-taking. I’m talking about the willingness to try new things without worrying about failure or about what others might think. They’re up for adventure and fun, and the fear of being judged neither crosses their mind nor dampens their enthusiasm. How might our lives be enriched if we threw fear to the wind and embraced life with gusto as they do?

  • Kids teach us to forgive.

If I had a nickel for every time my kids forgave me the moment I asked, I’d be independently wealthy. “I’m sorry for yelling again,” I’d say. “It’s okay, Mommy,” they’d reply. And then they’d wrap their arms around me and give me a big hug. Nursing a grudge never crossed their mind. Imagine a world filled with men and women for whom forgiveness came so naturally.

Spend a few minutes today thinking about the life lessons you’re learning from your children and share them with us here, okay? I’d love to hear your stories.
