Teach Your Kids by Cooking with Local Produce

Summer is a great time to use local fruit and vegetables. You might even have your own garden where you can pick vegetables as they ripen. Or maybe there’s a local place to go and pick, or a great farmer’s market. Teach your children how to tell when a fruit or vegetable is ripe. Tomatoes continue to ripen after picked, but strawberries don’t.

Farming is a very old occupation for people, and it started with Adam (Genesis 3:17-19). Jesus told parables about farmers (parable of the sower in Matthew 13:3-8 and the gardener and barren fig tree in Luke 13:6-9). Chat about parables and other references Jesus made to farming.

Summer is also a good time to teach kids to cook and make some muffins or breads with that produce. Try the following non-dairy blueberry muffin cupcake recipe. I generally use the recipe to make strawberry bread but it is great for any berry.

Non-dairy Blueberry Muffins

1½ cups flour

1 cup sugar

2 teaspoons cinnamon

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon baking soda

2 eggs, beaten

½ cup oil

1 pint fresh blueberries

Heat over to 350°F

  1. Grease and flour muffin cups or line cups with paper liners
  2. Mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda
  3. Beat together eggs, oil, and berries
  4. Slowly stir dry ingredients into liquid ingredients
  5. Pour into prepared muffin cups
  6. Bake 30-40 minutes (until toothpick comes out clean)

Code: People have connected stars like dots to see pictures in the sky that help them find their location at night. Connect dots to solve this secret code. Use the numbers to trace the lines in the square to form letters. So, 1379 is O and 28 is I. You’ll find out what Jesus called himself.
