Prepare Hearts for Christmas

Prepare Hearts for Christmas

Advent, the four weeks before Christmas, begins the weekend of Thanksgiving. It’s hard to believe that Christmas is around the corner.

Get ready for focusing on Christ at Christmas with daily books, music, and videos. Gather all the Christmas books, videos, and CDs you can find. Giftwrap and count them. Place them in a basket. Then start unwrapping them on the first Sunday of advent and enjoy them with your family. Do one every few days or so, depending on how many you wrap. Plan to do the last one just before Christmas.

Read Bible verses as you open the gifts. Check the list below of some Bible passages to read before unwrapping the day’s gift. Chat about them. Some are about prophecies long before the birth of Jesus and others describe what happened the first Christmas.

If you’re doing an advent wreath, get it ready ahead of time and chat about how you’ll use it. Check out my new book, Christmas is Coming, Waiting is Hard, as it contains a daily reading, simple activity, and other fun to focus on Jesus and journey from the prophets to the birth of Christ.

Prepare hearts by giving to the poor. Choose a name from a Christmas tree or locate places where you can donate gift items for those in need. Shop as a family for the gifts. Take an extra step. Add notes or little surprises to the gifts. For example, if you buy a pair of jeans, add little items into the pockets such as tiny toys, money, or gift cards. Write a note or prayer for the child who will receive the gift.

Prepare to be thankful. Chat about unexpected gifts and ones that don’t meet your hopes. Think of the giver and how to respond. The person took time to get a gift and give it to you. That shows some concern and care. Be thankful and know God will give you what you need.

Giving Thanks

Psalm 136 and several other places of the Bible use a phrase for why we should thank God. Decode this puzzle to find the phrase.
