Is There Room for Jesus?

Materials Needed: Calendar Scripture Reference: Revelation 3:20 Christmas is over and 2016 has ended. The new year has arrived—and that made me think about some things. Through the Christmas festivities we often think about symbols that can be associated with the birth of Christ. We remember a baby born of a virgin who is the promised Messiah, the angels proclaiming “Glory to God” as they sing, the shepherds and how they made haste to see the new born king, and the wise men who had been studying and looking toward the birth of a king. We think of a stable and manger with animals and the star. Jesus was born this way in the city of David, Bethlehem. This birth has been the most celebrated birth in history. This Christmas, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart about something we...

Are You Doing Your Part?

Materials:   Variety of kitchen and/or garage tools Scripture Reference: Ephesians 2:10 While preparing a meal several evenings ago, I was looking for a tool I have that is specifically designed for chopping meat. Finally, I gave up and used a different tool that was adequate for the job. It took much more effort on my part to use a less appropriate gadget, but nevertheless, I was able to get the meal on the table. During this frustrating process, I realized we are like these tools. God created each individual with a specific design that would enable them to complete the purpose for which they were created. We are all equal, but we each have a special job in the service of the Lord. So, could someone else do my part?  Absolutely. God will have the rocks and trees cry out in praise for Him...

Bears and Spiritual Binoculars

Materials: Binoculars Scripture Reference: Proverbs 8:17 For 35 years I have been blessed to live in a beautiful valley in Western North Carolina. With extensive woods and streams in the area, it would be expected for one to have seen a variety of wildlife. Fortunately, and unfortunately, that has not been true for the residents and visitors of my community. The wildlife is around no doubt, but it’s often a well-kept secret of our forests. So you might imagine my surprise and unbelief when my husband called one day and told me to watch out while I was on a nature walk with our children. A lifelong friend and neighbor had reported seeing a mama bear with three cubs. He said he had just seen them moments before. I trust both my husband and our friend, but to be...

Planting Seeds that Matter

Materials Needed: Grass Seed Scripture Reference: Matthew 28: 19-20 In recent months, we had some excavation around our barn. Though this process created better drainage as intended, it caused a different issue . . . a grass deficit. We had to plant grass seeds, which is not really a big deal, but the patience to wait for it to grow is not always readily available. Our children were super excited and eager to help scatter the seeds. I watched our son, Ethan, excitedly get a handful of seeds and run like mad to a certain spot. Each time he would get to the destination he had chosen he’d look into his hands. Then, he would pause, puzzled because his hands were empty. What Ethan did not realize is that even though he was empty-handed at his destination, he had...

In Need of Some Help!

Materials Needed: crutches Scripture Reference: 2 Corinthians 12:9, 10 Has anyone in your family ever been on crutches? I have learned many lessons throughout my life, and, unfortunately, I often learn best from problematic situations. My most recent lesson came from one of those circumstances. I had to learn to use crutches. In the past, I have watched others using crutches, and, I admit, I questioned if there was really a benefit with using them. In taking my first steps with the crutches, I really felt it was harder on me to try to use them than it would have been to just walk normally, even with the discomfort of my injury. But after figuring out how to do it and getting into a rhythm, I realized the use of crutches was beneficial. The benefits are these: stability, pressure...

Naturally Sweet

Materials: Honey Scripture Reference: Psalm 119:103 Bee-keeping has proven to be an adventurous and rewarding process. It turns out, the final result is the sweetest treat a person could hope to get. Honey is rich in sweetness, and consuming it regularly provides numerous benefits. Some of those benefits include: natural energy booster, preventing muscle fatigue, immune system builder, treatment of sore throat because of antimicrobial properties, improved digestion, etc. Honey is good for eating and useful to aid overall wellness. Have you ever thought about the process bees complete to produce honey? It’s orderly and precise. Producing this special treat with so many uses is a completely natural by-product of the work the bees do. For those trusting Jesus as Lord and Savior, we have something sweeter and better than honey. In Psalms 119:103, we read that God’s words are...
