Peace at Home

Let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build each other up. ~Romans 14:19 Like a quiet day by a calm body of water, peace brings up lovely images and harmony. Sometimes we can only hope for inner peace that God gives while we nurture the Fruit of the Spirit in our children (that includes peace). Peace flows from a heart that is happy and full of love.   Promote Peace Follow a peace acrostic to have the best attitude toward harmony Praise each person’s positive actions and effort Eagerly open your ears and listen Accept individuals as God made them Consider needs of others before your own Entreat God in prayer for solutions Respect encourages peace Peace also comes when a person feels, accepted, respected, and valued. Show respect: Listen...

Kindness

Kindness Object Lessons Drop a leaf and a rock into water. The leaf floats and gently touches the water. The rock causes ripples and disturbs the water, and then sinks. That’s the difference between kind and angry words. One gives the person a gentle touch, like a soft kiss. The other disturbs the person, pushes into their day, and the words often sink in as hard reminders. Too often people can be like angry birds trying to boss and change others without kindness. Shine a flashlight onto a mirror and watch the light bounce back. Kind words reflect a heart full of light. Kind words often cause a person to pass on kind words to someone else. The kindness seems to bounce from one person to another. Chat about being kind. How is talking back not being kind (or...

Beat the Heat

Posted by on Jul 19, 2016 in A LASTING FAITH, Blog, Family Do-votions | 0 comments

God’s people spent forty years wandering a desert. They experienced lots of heat and thirst. Hosea 13:5 reminds people that God cared for them in the dry and thirsty land. Read John 4, especially verse 14. Jesus went to a well for a drink and spoke to a woman about living water. When you feel thirsty this summer think about water from Jesus. Enjoy fun with ice to beat the heat. Shave some to make a slushy or pour a drink over it to make an ice cone. Grab a bucket of ice and make a sculpture. As the cubes melt a little, they will easily stick together. Hold ice cube races and see who gets their ice melting the fastest. Try placing the cubes on various colors and types of paper. Hold an ice race. Find an outdoor...

Look at the ocean, so big and wide! It is filled with more creatures than people can count. It is filled with living things, from the largest to the smallest. Psalm 104:25 NIRV You might live near the ocean or take a trip to one this summer. Or, you might explore wonders of the ocean online or at an aquarium. While splashing, swimming, and picnicking, take time to appreciate the ocean or other waterway. Check out unusual sea creatures. Octopi have no bones and are very flexible. They can squeeze through holes just slightly larger than their eyeball. Sharks lay the largest eggs in the world Humpback whales are the loudest creatures in the world. They can be heard up to 500 miles away from where they are located. Pacific Viperfish have such large teeth that they can never...

Ascension of Jesus

Posted by on May 12, 2016 in A LASTING FAITH, Blog, Family Do-votions | 0 comments

Throw a ball up and it comes back down. Gravity pulls it back to earth. Birds fly, but must land to rest and eat. Planes fly but must land to refuel. Jesus is different. As the disciples stood and watched, Jesus rose into the sky, up above the clouds. He stayed up. Two men in white clothes, probably angels, asked why they stood looking. They added that Jesus was taken into heaven and will come back in the same way. We know he will come back down because we know he went up and believe what the Bible said. Here are ideas to celebrate the Ascension: Fill a room with white helium-filled balloons. Add one red helium-filled mylar balloon. Let it go up and push its way between the cloud of white balloons. Then talk about how Jesus rose...

The Witness of God in the Sky

Look up toward the sky. Who created everything you see? The Lord causes the stars to come out at night one by one. He calls out each one of them by name. His power and strength are great. So none of the stars is missing. Isaiah 40:26 NIRV The last week of April is sky awareness week. That’s a wonderful time to lie out in the evening and watch the sky change. See the sunset and the stars start to twinkle and light up the night. Read Job 38: 7, 31-33. God shares how he controls the sky that he created. He knows and understands all that we see above us. Enjoy God’s amazing drama on a clear night. Talk Find a sky map online (http://neave.com/planetarium/ or http://www.kidsastronomy.com/astroskymap/).
