February is American Heart Month as well as the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day. The second week of the month is also International Friendship month. Love helps keep our hearts healthy and happy. God made you, including your heart fearfully and wonderfully. You are a marvel! For a healthy heart, be sure to exercise, especially aerobic and cardiovascular exercises that get your heart beat going. Take family walks and take turns leading some calisthenics. Hold a dance night to get hearts pumping and laughter going. Play some wii sport games that get everyone moving. Also chat about the importance of a good diet for the heart. Avoid too much salt and experiment with spices and seasonings to add flavor to foods. Eat more fresh produce and less packaged foods. Visit a farmer’s market and let kids choose fruits and...

Snow Fun

Posted by on Jan 20, 2017 in A LASTING FAITH, Blog, Family Do-votions | 0 comments

White fluffy snow is a sign of winter. The Bible also talks about snow. It tells us that God sends the snow and even keeps storehouses of snow (Job 37:6, 38:22 and Psalm 147:16). Jesus’ face and clothes glowed white as snow (Matthew 28:3 and Revelation 1:14). A mother who buys or makes warm clothing for her children does not fear snow (Proverbs 31: 21). And best of all, the Bible tells us that no matter how bad a sin, God will clean us and make us white as snow (Isaiah 1:18 and Psalm 51: 7) Each snowflake is unique if you study them under a microscope. You are unique too! Have fun in the snow: ¨     Make snow angels. ¨     Enjoy a snow treat by pouring maple syrup over clean snow and eating it. ¨     Make a snow...

Posted by on Nov 30, 2016 in A LASTING FAITH, Blog, Family Do-votions | 0 comments

Advent, the four weeks before Christmas, begins the weekend of Thanksgiving. It’s hard to believe that Christmas is around the corner. Get ready for focusing on Christ at Christmas with daily books, music, and videos. Gather all the Christmas books, videos, and CDs you can find. Giftwrap and count them. Place them in a basket. Then start unwrapping them on the first Sunday of advent and enjoy them with your family. Do one every few days or so, depending on how many you wrap. Plan to do the last one just before Christmas. Read Bible verses as you open the gifts. Check the list below of some Bible passages to read before unwrapping the day’s gift. Chat about them. Some are about prophecies long before the birth of Jesus and others describe what happened the first Christmas. If you’re...

Peace at Home

Let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build each other up. ~Romans 14:19 Like a quiet day by a calm body of water, peace brings up lovely images and harmony. Sometimes we can only hope for inner peace that God gives while we nurture the Fruit of the Spirit in our children (that includes peace). Peace flows from a heart that is happy and full of love.   Promote Peace Follow a peace acrostic to have the best attitude toward harmony Praise each person’s positive actions and effort Eagerly open your ears and listen Accept individuals as God made them Consider needs of others before your own Entreat God in prayer for solutions Respect encourages peace Peace also comes when a person feels, accepted, respected, and valued. Show respect: Listen...

Kindness Object Lessons Drop a leaf and a rock into water. The leaf floats and gently touches the water. The rock causes ripples and disturbs the water, and then sinks. That’s the difference between kind and angry words. One gives the person a gentle touch, like a soft kiss. The other disturbs the person, pushes into their day, and the words often sink in as hard reminders. Too often people can be like angry birds trying to boss and change others without kindness. Shine a flashlight onto a mirror and watch the light bounce back. Kind words reflect a heart full of light. Kind words often cause a person to pass on kind words to someone else. The kindness seems to bounce from one person to another. Chat about being kind. How is talking back not being kind (or...

Beat the Heat

Posted by on Jul 19, 2016 in A LASTING FAITH, Blog, Family Do-votions | 0 comments

God’s people spent forty years wandering a desert. They experienced lots of heat and thirst. Hosea 13:5 reminds people that God cared for them in the dry and thirsty land. Read John 4, especially verse 14. Jesus went to a well for a drink and spoke to a woman about living water. When you feel thirsty this summer think about water from Jesus. Enjoy fun with ice to beat the heat. Shave some to make a slushy or pour a drink over it to make an ice cone. Grab a bucket of ice and make a sculpture. As the cubes melt a little, they will easily stick together. Hold ice cube races and see who gets their ice melting the fastest. Try placing the cubes on various colors and types of paper. Hold an ice race. Find an outdoor...
