Tis the Season! Another Christmas is upon us and the most wonderful—and busiest—time of the year is here. I know this time of year can be overwhelming. We have to allow ourselves to slow down, to enjoy the season, and to remember the reason for the season. As the years go by, it sometimes seems to become harder to just relax and enjoy this time and to reflect on what we should be celebrating—and that is the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus. We can become too wrapped up in the activities, gifts, entertaining, etc. I encourage you in this last few days before Christmas to take time to remember what the season is about, and to enjoy your family and the loved ones around you. Slow down and savor those precious moments. If you’re like me, I...

Butter Pecan Pound Cake with Creamy Coffee Glaze

Thanksgiving is here! What a wonderful time of the year as family and friends gather together to celebrate this day. It’s a day set aside to recognize all the things we are most thankful for. Of course we should be thankful every day as I am sure many of us are, but on this day we reflect on it more. Psalm 9:1 says, “I will give thanks to you Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.”  What a great verse that reminds us to thank God and to share with others all the wonderful things He has done in our lives. This is the day that also starts off the holiday season.  We gather together, set the table, and enjoy a bountiful spread of food. For many of us it’s a day we...

Monkey Bread

Wow, what a fast summer this has been! Is it just me or does time just seem to fly by as we get older? I guess that’s why with age we realize the importance of time—making the most of it, and enjoying each moment. We have really had some fun family times this summer and I’ve enjoyed spending it with my grandson. I have a Monkey Bread recipe to share with you that has been popular in our family. The recipe I have uses canned biscuits and just a few other ingredients, and that makes it so simple. My children made this when they were young, as teen-agers, and now as adults. My grandson, Bryce, is now carrying on the tradition. He helps cut the biscuits, shakes them in the sugar mixture, and puts them in the pan. Since...

School Spirit Celebration Cookies

It’s that time again! Many of our children have started back to school. The temperatures don’t know that summer is over, but the beginning of school tells us it is, and there are many back to school activities to get us back in the swing of things and share information with those new to the school. One of the big things in our area (and I am sure in your area) is the school colors and supporting the local athletic activity in school. Of course this time of year, it’s the football team. Our local team is the Jaguars and we have a “Meet the Jaguars” night at the beginning of the school year. We go to the football field and they introduce all the different athletic programs and the players, the cheerleaders, the band and so on. All...

Let’s Have a Picnic!

Posted by on Jul 25, 2016 in A HAPPY HOME, Blog, Celebrate the Family Table | 0 comments

Let’s have a picnic! Picnics are such a fun thing to do with children. If you are looking for a budget-friendly activity, have a picnic. You are going to feed the children anyway, so make it fun. You can have picnics in the backyard, on the floor in the house when the weather doesn’t permit it outdoors, or you can go to the local park.  A picnic can be as creative as you want by having a theme like reading books, a safari theme pretending to be animals, playing games, and it can go on and on. Get the children involved in choosing the theme and the menu—and don’t forget to keep the food fun. I have some fun food ideas to share with you today using very simple ingredients. I’m sharing a recipe for peanut-butter-and-jelly fruit kabobs, but...

Cupcakes to Match Your Child’s Books

Glorious summertime is here.  Let the fun begin! We love the summer with less stress and routine, staying up and sleeping later, and having friends and family over for visits. We spend a lot of time outside, but when those temperatures rise, unless you are swimming, it can become too hot. So as the activities move indoors, we as parents and grandparents want to encourage activities besides just television. This is a good time to bring out the books. Most school-age children have summer reading and most of your libraries have summer programs for young children. This is a good opportunity to visit your library to check out books for all ages. As a mother, and now a grandmother, I have always enjoyed book time with the children. My grandson and I have taken our book time a step...
