Monkey Bread

Posted by on Oct 5, 2016 in A HAPPY HOME, Blog, Celebrate the Family Table | 0 comments

Wow, what a fast summer this has been! Is it just me or does time just seem to fly by as we get older? I guess that’s why with age we realize the importance of time—making the most of it, and enjoying each moment. We have really had some fun family times this summer and I’ve enjoyed spending it with my grandson. I have a Monkey Bread recipe to share with you that has been popular in our family. The recipe I have uses canned biscuits and just a few other ingredients, and that makes it so simple. My children made this when they were young, as teen-agers, and now as adults. My grandson, Bryce, is now carrying on the tradition. He helps cut the biscuits, shakes them in the sugar mixture, and puts them in the pan. Since...

School Spirit Celebration Cookies

It’s that time again! Many of our children have started back to school. The temperatures don’t know that summer is over, but the beginning of school tells us it is, and there are many back to school activities to get us back in the swing of things and share information with those new to the school. One of the big things in our area (and I am sure in your area) is the school colors and supporting the local athletic activity in school. Of course this time of year, it’s the football team. Our local team is the Jaguars and we have a “Meet the Jaguars” night at the beginning of the school year. We go to the football field and they introduce all the different athletic programs and the players, the cheerleaders, the band and so on. All...

Let’s Have a Picnic!

Posted by on Jul 25, 2016 in A HAPPY HOME, Blog, Celebrate the Family Table | 0 comments

Let’s have a picnic! Picnics are such a fun thing to do with children. If you are looking for a budget-friendly activity, have a picnic. You are going to feed the children anyway, so make it fun. You can have picnics in the backyard, on the floor in the house when the weather doesn’t permit it outdoors, or you can go to the local park.  A picnic can be as creative as you want by having a theme like reading books, a safari theme pretending to be animals, playing games, and it can go on and on. Get the children involved in choosing the theme and the menu—and don’t forget to keep the food fun. I have some fun food ideas to share with you today using very simple ingredients. I’m sharing a recipe for peanut-butter-and-jelly fruit kabobs, but...

Cupcakes to Match Your Child’s Books

Posted by on Jun 27, 2016 in A HAPPY HOME, Blog, Celebrate the Family Table | 0 comments

Glorious summertime is here.  Let the fun begin! We love the summer with less stress and routine, staying up and sleeping later, and having friends and family over for visits. We spend a lot of time outside, but when those temperatures rise, unless you are swimming, it can become too hot. So as the activities move indoors, we as parents and grandparents want to encourage activities besides just television. This is a good time to bring out the books. Most school-age children have summer reading and most of your libraries have summer programs for young children. This is a good opportunity to visit your library to check out books for all ages. As a mother, and now a grandmother, I have always enjoyed book time with the children. My grandson and I have taken our book time a step...

Summertime Macaroni Salad

Posted by on May 24, 2016 in A HAPPY HOME, Blog, Celebrate the Family Table | 0 comments

Here we are at this wonderful time of the year again! School is out for most of us or it’s about to be. The days are longer, warmer, and those outside activities are calling us. We spend a lot of our time outside at those spring and summer sports or just enjoying the outside area of our home. This time of year calls for lighter, more refreshing foods. For some of us, fresh produce is coming to our local farmer’s markets and we are anxious to include those items in our mealtime fare. I love to be in the kitchen, but at this time of year we are looking for more make-ahead foods to enjoy as we spend time outdoors. I have a macaroni salad that meets the criteria for make-ahead, lighter, and fresher. It’s also a great dish...

Strawberry Pie

Posted by on Apr 22, 2016 in A HAPPY HOME, Blog, Celebrate the Family Table | 0 comments

One of my favorite things about this time of year are the fresh strawberries we get in our area. We live very close to Louisiana. As we all know, the area has a reputation for its good Cajun and creole foods, but Louisiana is also known for its strawberries. They even have a weekend festival every year in April to celebrate this delicious fruit—and you can find just about anything made with strawberries. Of course, I take advantage of their freshness this time of year. I put them in my salads and cereal. I make sauces with them and, fix desserts—and one of my favorite ones to make is a fresh strawberry pie. I use a recipe that my brother passed on to me from a restaurant that was famous for their strawberry pie. It is one of my...
