Back to School Prayers for Our Children

Back to School Prayers for Our Children

When I was growing up, getting ready to go back to school was an exciting time. There were new shoes and clothes to shop for, as well as the traditional trip to buy school supplies. I still get excited about a new box of crayons or freshly sharpened #2 pencils.

After we had kids of our own, the excitement changed a little. It was still fun to help them get ready, but there were conflicting emotions now at play. I was looking forward to a calmer schedule with everyone back at school, but also missing the time we’d have to spend together.

In the last few years, back-to-school emotions have changed yet again. Now there’s an aspect of fear that goes along with letting our kids go for hours each day. Will they be safe, is at the forefront of many parents’ thoughts. I don’t know about you, but I worry about everything from bullies to bullets. So today’s prayer addresses some of our fears as we take our worries to the One who keeps our children safe, regardless of the situations they face.

Dear Lord,

Back to school is an exciting time for my son, but it’s a scary time for me. I worry about leaving him in someone else’s charge when there are so many dangers around every corner. I want to prepare him, but I don’t want to frighten him. Help me navigate these challenging times.

Remind me of all the times you’ve been my son’s shield. Don’t let me forget that You’ve always been his first line of defense. Show me how to teach him to always turn to you first, no matter what circumstances surround him.

Protect him from those who wish him harm. Don’t let him be picked on or ridiculed by other kids. If he is, make sure he has friends who will take up for him, and wise adults who will address the situation correctly. Most of all protect him from the dangers that appear in the news. Put Your hedge of protection around the school and protect all those within.

As I once again send my son back to school, give me peace about where he is and what’s happening during his day. Don’t let me dwell on the what ifs. Instead, help me anchor myself in the secure knowledge that You are always with him, no matter what. Amen.
